Short answer

At your location in Sunnyvale, SOS Roadside Service tests the car battery first and replaces it only if the battery is actually what’s wrong, using the recommended matching replacement. The technician does both at the car, at work or at home.

Average response time of about 18 minutes.

The job

The jump gives the first clue

When a car won’t start, the battery is the obvious suspect, but not the only one. So before a new battery goes in, the technician looks at the old one: its age, its physical condition, and any damage or wear you can see on it.

Then comes the jump, and how the car behaves on it is a clue. If headlights left on were all that emptied the battery, a jump will often bring it back. A battery can also go flat with nothing wrong with it at all, because an alternator that isn’t charging or another electrical problem drained it.

So the order is test, then decide. When the battery is the culprit, it’s swapped for the recommended matching replacement in that same parking space. When it isn’t, you hear what the signs point to, and alternators and starters are jobs we do too.

Sunnyvale

Lots along Kifer Road, curbs on Reed Avenue

Say the car sat all day in a work lot along Kifer Road or Oakmead Parkway and only clicks when you come back to it. Leave it in the space. We come to that spot and do the testing there.

At home it might be a driveway off South Sunnyvale Avenue or a curb on Reed Avenue. The visit is the same: the battery gets checked where the car sits, and you hear what we find.

Telling us where you are

  • Work lotGive the street number on the building and which lot you’re in: ‘[number] Kifer Road, the lot behind the building, gray Accord, I’m waiting by the car.’
  • At home‘[number] [street], off South Sunnyvale Avenue, car in the driveway, garage door open.’ Keep your key with you.
  • Jumped before‘It needed a jump [how long ago] and now it’s dead again.’ Say so on the call. A battery that dies again and again can point to something other than the battery.

“The car suddenly would not start … It turned out not to be a battery issue, but some weird computer glitch, which he somehow figured out … It finally started after he tried rebooting the whole system. …”

Before you call.

Who replaces car batteries at your location in Sunnyvale?

We do. SOS Roadside Service sends a technician to the car in Sunnyvale, tests the battery right where it sits, and replaces it on site only when the battery is the problem. Phone (650) 898-3789 between 7:00am and 8:00pm, Monday through Sunday.

What if the test shows it isn’t the battery?

Then the battery stays, and you hear what the test found instead. A good battery can be emptied by a light left on, a faulty alternator or some other electrical problem, and we explain which way the signs point. Alternator and starter replacement are on our service list.

What should I have ready when I call?

Four things: your name, the car’s location, the year, make and model, and a description of what it’s doing. That’s it. We come to you and look at the car where it’s parked.
